What Mountain Brook is built from
Tudor, Colonial and stone houses laid out from 1929 on estate-sized lots along winding roads over Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, with substantial later builds filling in behind them. A great deal of original oak and heart pine underfoot, and a great many brick and stone crawlspaces that were never built to be dry.
Established households, a lot of second- and third-generation ownership, and formal rooms that are furnished properly and then largely left alone. Good hand-knotted rugs are common here, and most of them were inherited or bought deliberately rather than chosen to match a sofa.
The Mountain Brook problem
The tree canopy is the thing nobody counts as a rug problem. Mountain Brook was planned around its trees and kept nearly all of them, so most of these lots are in deep shade for most of the day — which is lovely to live under and terrible for drying out the ground beneath a house. Through a wet Alabama winter the soil in an unvented crawlspace never gets a chance to give its moisture back, and the rug on the floor above acts as the lid on it. Wool holds close to a third of its own weight in water without feeling damp to the hand, so the pile stays dry to the touch while the cotton foundation quietly loads up. The second half of it is stillness: a rug in a dining room nobody walks through is vacuumed rarely, lifted almost never, and that is exactly the condition clothes-moth larvae want. They graze the underside first, so the surface looks intact while the knots behind it are going.
